Description: Burnout, moral injury, surgeon distress, well-being, and wellness are areas of significant discussion of late, especially as we are trying to recover from a global pandemic. “In Surgeon Wellness, The Way I See It,” Dr. Smith will identify factors within the healthcare system and surgical practices that increase the risk of burnout, moral injury, and surgeon distress, and follow with strategies that improve personal wellness in the spiritual, emotional, mental, and physical dimensions of our lives.

Resident Case Presentations “The Surgeon IS the Case!”
Description: Residents will present real life cases just like any case-based fracture conference. However, these cases will be focused on the Surgeon and their well-being. Please be sensitive to privacy issues while relaying the important information within the case. We ask that all attendees also respect any confidential information that may be discussed. (I will leave it up to the residents to determine if they need a faculty back-up or wish to discuss with me ahead of time for any of the case discussions.)

Dr. Jeffrey M. Smith is a practicing Orthopaedic Traumatologist, Director of the San Diego Orthopaedic Trauma Fellowship, and a physician coach. With over 20 years of experience within an academic and private practice, he has learned to cope with the ups and downs of being a performance-driven surgeon and even experienced some episodes of burnout during his career.
