Dear Community:
In early June I traveled to Chicago for the American Academy of Physician Leaders (AAPL) annual conference to present, “The Value of a Coaching Mindset in Physician Leadership.” It was a fun opportunity to visit the place where I grew up and went to Northwestern undergrad and Rush medical school, and where my daughter is now attending college at Loyola. The presentation was well received and I learned a lot from others.
During my presentation and in conversations afterward, I tried to impress upon attendees that a coaching approach in leadership is different from traditional leadership in healthcare. Applying a coaching mindset in healthcare emphasizes trust and safety, listening, and facilitating growth in others. It’s about generating reflective thought and inspiring others to be their best. It is not about telling others what to do.
If you would like to learn more about a coaching mindset, attend a Physician Coaching Office Hours, or check out a few of the resources from the community below.
