I want to reflect on an important observance we recognized on October 10, 2024: World Mental Health Day. This year’s theme, “Mental Health at Work,” is especially relevant to our community. For physicians, the unique challenges we face at work can significantly impact our mental health in different ways, and the resources, strategies, and tools that are effective for each of us may vary.
I am a firm believer that to experience wellness, we must actively practice wellness and avoid falling into the false trap of unhealthy coping mechanisms. No matter what you have convinced yourself to believe, our career path is both rewarding and stressful. This isn’t about placing the burden solely on individuals; rather, it’s about empowering ourselves with resilience and self-care (HEALTH) as we advocate for systemic changes to address the many occupational hazards (INJURIES). While we endeavor to create healthier work environments and shift the culture of medicine, taking steps to care for ourselves is an essential part of that culture change.
Achieving meaningful change, however, requires support and resources. I encourage you to reach out to your representatives to advocate for physician wellness and mental health funding through the Lorna Breen Heroes’ Foundation.
Together, we can make a difference—not only for ourselves but for future generations of physicians. Thank you for being part of this community and for your ongoing commitment to wellness and growth. Let’s continue to support each other in this mission. While our Coaches are not trained to diagnose and treat mental illness, we are trained to support and be a resource for physicians seeking wellness and their best PRACTICE.
