Unlearning Bad Habits Like Solving Other People’s Problems
Hi Community:
When a physician starts coach training they have to unlearn bad habits they’ve developed like trying to solve other people’s problems and feeling the burden of finding their solutions. It sounds funny, but I’m serious.
Coaching is about helping others, though often not in the way people think. Coaches rarely advise or mentor, unless they are in that mode. Rather, professional executive coaches support learning, reflection, planning, and the decision-making process in the partnership with their coachees. Coaching is effective because the coachee determines the direction and the eventual outcome. The coachee has the burden to find their own solutions and to address their own habits. The coachee has the power to decide what happens.
What’s more sustainable – simply telling someone what to do, or helping them come to an understanding on their own terms?
