Pump the brakes on your week and take 10 minutes to make your life as a surgeon just a little better…
Jeff welcomes to the podcast Professor at The University of New Mexico (UNM), and Chair of the Department of Orthopaedics & Rehabilitation, Bob Schenck.
According to Bob, a great leader has three major attributes:
- Emotional intelligence
- Good business sense
- An understanding of culture
These three elements can help any surgeon adapt and evolve throughout the course of their career. These attributes are innate in some surgeons, but can and should be actively cultivated.
What steps does Bob suggest we do to cultivate these attributes on a daily basis?
- Step 1 – Get up early so you can enjoy some time to yourself. For Bob, this means going for a swim and having a cup of coffee before work begins.
- Step 2 – Tell yourself: “It’s going to be a great day.”
- Step 3 – Whatever comes your way, handle it with calmness, a smile, and an appreciation for life.
Most importantly, PRACTICE some emotional intelligence!
