Pump the brakes on your week and take 10 minutes to make your life as a surgeon just a little better…
Jeff welcomes to the podcast “recovering” radiologist and mindset coach, Dr. Tracey O’Connell.
Shame is ever-present in the field of medicine. As medical professionals we are burdened with an incredible amount of expectations, which can often make us feel like we’re not good enough or that we don’t belong. We need to combat those feelings of shame with self-compassion.
All of our strengths as medical professionals can work against us when we’re overwhelmed. In order to keep showing up every day we need to maintain our connection to why we got into medicine in the first place.
What steps does Tracey suggest we do to reckon with shame?
- Step 1 – Acknowledge the shame if you’re not feeling “good enough.”
- Step 2 – Foster connections in meaningful ways with colleagues, staff, patients, etc.
- Step 3 – Understand that you’re not alone! Many of your colleagues are likely feeling the same way.
Most importantly, PRACTICE self-compassion!
