Pump the brakes on your week and take 10 minutes to make your life as a surgeon just a little better…
Jeff welcomes to the podcast Urologist and mentor, Dr. Tim Terry. Tim has been a visiting professor in four countries and has published more than 90 academic articles.
Reflective practice is the cornerstone of professional performance for surgeons and their trainees, but its usage doesn’t follow any standardized framework.
The new kid on the block is known as “daily small reflective practice” – which is a novel concept that has arisen from the popularity of using emotional agility and being self-aware in the workplace. This can help a surgeon better understand how they’re feeling on a daily basis, something we were mistakenly trained to suppress or ignore. When a surgeon understands how they’re feeling on a daily basis, they can better assess their resilience and take steps to improve.
What steps does Tim suggest we do to improve reflective practice?
- Step 1 – Start a daily log of your clinical performance and emotional state.
- Step 2 – Review these entries on a weekly basis to see if any changes are needed.
- Step 3 – If you find your resilience worsening over time, seek help from a mentor.
Most importantly, we need to PRACTICE daily reflection!
