Pump the brakes on your week and take 10 minutes to make your life as a surgeon just a little better…
Jeff welcomes to the mini-podcast certified physician coach and physician executive, Dr. Terri Malcolm.
As physicians, we are expected to be really good at communication. And while most physicians are great at explaining medical conditions, procedures, treatments, and more, many of us don’t focus enough on an essential element of communication — listening.
The words we say bear weight, but words are often not as important as how we say them. When we listen closely to a patient, colleague, or friend, we are able to respond more effectively and to speak their “love language.”
What does Terri suggest we do to listen and communicate more effectively?
- Step 1 – Take an honest self-assessment. Ask yourself some questions about how you interact with others. Do you multitask or interrupt people when talking?
- Step 2 – During your next interaction, try to ask more questions rather than making statements.
- Step 3 – When a person answers a question, be quiet and actively listen to their response.
Most importantly, PRACTICE active listening and effective communication!
