Dear Community,
It’s hard to believe 2023 is coming to a close! With a lot going on, it’s easy to lose track of time. It feels like I was just setting our 2023 goals, but now it’s already time to reflect on our successes and measure progress.
I wrote to the SurgeonMasters community in December 2022:
“In 2023, my macro goals are to contribute to the surgeon coaching landscape in the form of educational content, client growth, and training more coaches…”
Here are a few successes I would like to share:
- Physician Coach Training Level 1 Accreditation – Physician Coach Training was recognized by the International Coaching Federation (ICF) as a Level 1 Coach Training program. Accreditation is open to all education and training programs that are educating and equipping coaches professionally, personally, and organizationally to maximize personal and professional potential, and want to be held to the highest industry standards. This achievement makes us the FIRST Level Accredited Physician Coach Training Program!
- Physician Coaches – In addition to training physician coaches, we’re continuing to add great coaches to the SurgeonMasters team. Coaching goes much smoother when the fit between coach and client creates early relatability. Coaches bring different experiences, perspectives, and specialties to support clients; clients bring goals, challenges, and autonomy to move forward.
- Publications – I contributed to three publications in 2023 on the topic of physician wellness and coaching. The level of evidence demonstrating the value of physician coaching is growing.
- What’s Important: Living (and Thriving) with Stress JBJS with Bob Ostrum and
- Sabiston Textbook of Surgery chapter on Physician Wellness and Burnout with surgeon coach Taylor Riall, MD
- Instructional Course Lectures Vol 72 – Editors Brian Galinat, MD and Ronald Navarro, MD
- OTA Annual Meeting – I started advocating for surgeon wellness and coaching in earnest at the OTA annual meeting in 2014. It has been a long journey rooted in physician resilience. This year an entire room was dedicated to wellness with two days of presentations NOT just from Jeff Smith. SurgeonMasters led wellness events, including biking, tai chi, and yoga for the seventh year. We also added two group coaching sessions to the agenda.
- Group Coaching Sessions – Late in 2023 SurgeonMasters started offering Physician Group Coaching sessions. Group coaching is a great way to participate in a community and leverage a group dynamic to further our goals.
What success are you proud of in 2023? Let me know.
There are two remaining SurgeonMasters Physician Group Coaching sessions in 2023. I hope you can attend! Registration is free and you can earn 1 CME credit per session.
