Dear Community,
SurgeonMasters is on a mission to help every physician perform at their best through coaching, for as long as they choose to practice.
One barrier preventing wider adoption of coaching in healthcare?
The misconception that coaching is only for poor performance, bad behavior, or fixing a deficiency. That’s simply not true. Coaching can benefit any physician, regardless of performance or behavior. None of us are perfect and working with a coach can help us continually improve. Coaching is about being our best.
Physicians are highly trained, tremendously resilient, and constantly driven to do their best. These same strengths create vulnerabilities. Simply put, we are all humans working with significant occupational hazards, including high stress, high stakes, moral injuries, and limited resources. We strongly believe that every physician deserves a coach who can help them along their desired career path. We even engaged an attorney to write a contract clause that can be copied and pasted into a physician contract. [Coaching Contract Clause]
Physician coaching with true coaching principles has the greatest potential to drive positive and sustainable change. Since 2018, I’ve had the privilege of coaching more than 100 surgeons, covering a wide range of topics—from leadership development and team management to wellness, career transitions, and communication. The common thread among my clients was that each had unique careers and life circumstances, making the coaching model especially effective.
I’ve personally worked with a business coach to enhance my life and career fulfillment, manage a medical practice, and develop a coaching program. I’ve also worked with peer coaches to support my wellness and career goals. The impact has been profound, and I truly believe every physician should have the same opportunity by working hand-in-hand with a physician coach.
