Dear Community,
What values define you?
It’s not always an easy question to answer.
In the rush of clinical demands, administrative pressures, and personal responsibilities, our values can fade into the background. But I’ve found—and many of you have shared—that when we take the time to identify, honor, and align our actions with our core values, we’re more fulfilled and we can truly practice our best.
This is not an easy process, but in recent conversations with physicians at every career stage—early, mid, and late—the same truth kept surfacing for me: knowing and honoring oneself is essential.
Aligning our purpose with how we lead teams, support peers, and care for patients brings out our authentic selves. When the system demands we sacrifice our values for the “greater good,” we face a profound ethical and emotional conflict. If you find yourself in a moment like this, what if you applied a coaching mindset?
Here’s an example of what that might look like:
- Pause and Reflect
- What values are being compromised?
- What does the “greater good” really mean in this context?
- Who defines it—and at what cost?
- Seek Clarity
- How could you shift this away from an either-or situation to shared goals and values?
- What are creative solutions that allow you to honor your values and contribute to the bigger picture?
- What would be clear, fair expectations, aligned with your professional role and ethical obligations?
- Engage in Community
- Connect with trusted colleagues, supporters, or a coach.
- Receive support from others with similar experiences.
- Uncover strategies for self-advocacy or positive action.
SurgeonMasters believes connection and community are key to that process. We’re here to support you as you reconnect with what matters most.
Thank you for being a part of this mission to transform healthcare from the inside out.
