Pump the brakes on your week and take 10 minutes to make your life as a surgeon just a little better…
Jeff welcomes to the podcast family physician and author, Dr. Jenny Brockis.
Jenny focuses much of her work on psychological safety – a topic that has been largely neglected in the medical community until somewhat recently. Psychological safety at work means that employees feel safe, included, and unafraid of judgement.
Psychological safety is important in every work environment, but it’s particularly important in healthcare work settings.
What steps does Jenny suggest we take to create psychological safety in our work environments?
- Step 1 – Lead with kindness and compassion. Leading your staff by example and with compassion is the best way to ensure psychological safety at work.
- Step 2 – Make it safe for everyone to speak up. It’s always a red flag that something is wrong when staff members are afraid to speak their minds.
- Step 3 – Communicate with your colleagues. Talking regularly with your co-workers is a healthy way to discuss the pros and cons of your work environment and address any potential issues.
Most importantly, PRACTICE psychological safety in the workplace!

As a child Dr. Jenny’s favorite bedtime story was “How The Elephant Got His Trunk.” Like the elephant, she was insatiably curious, which also got her into a bit of trouble, like the time she set the kitchen on fire during a chemistry experiment. Her curiosity led to a career in medicine, but she only discovered her true calling after burning out. Today as an international speaker, best-selling author, and workplace consultant her mission is to make work, work better by making mental wellbeing the norm and burnout redundant. www.drjennybrockis.com
