What does it look like when things are going well?
And what does it look like when we hit a rough patch?
As physicians, we’re pretty good at recognizing when something isn’t right in our patients and colleagues. Recognizing it in ourselves can be harder.
Colleague and friend, Dr. Marlene DeMaio, recently introduced us to a battle buddy—someone we trust enough to notice when something has changed and cares enough to say something.
Trusted relationships are essential to our wellness, and they can take many forms: a friend, a colleague, a mentor, a peer, or a coach. It’s important to give trusted people in our lives explicit permission to tell us when we’re not ourselves or when something doesn’t seem right.
Sometimes wellness starts with something simple: knowing what we look like when we’re doing well, and having someone we trust who will tell us when things have changed.
Who is your battle buddy?
And do they know it?
